Maliau Basin (EB-MB05) Itinerary:

Day 1: SKY BRIDGE: KOTA KINABALU / MBSC / SKY BRIDGE / NIGHT DRIVE

  • Depart overland from Kota Kinabalu to Maliau Basin via Keningau (approx. 155 km: 5 hours).

  • Arrival at Maliau Basin Security Gate / Shell Maliau Basin Reception and Information Building (SMRIB).
  • Short Tour and Briefing At SMRIB (gallery).

  • Proceed overland To Maliau Basin Study Centre (MBSC) (approx. 27 km: 1 hour).
  • Arrival At MBSC.

  • Register and check In.
  • Proceed to Sky Bridge & visit Around Study Centre.

  • Dinner.
  • Video show (30 Minutes).

  • Night Drive or Night Walk in search of nocturnal animals (Optional and/or Dependent on Weather).
  • Rest and overnight at MBSC.

Day 2: AGATHIS CAMP / GINSENG CAMP

  • Breakfast.

  • Depart by road to Agathis Camp.
  • Agathis Camp is the first and closest access to the pristine tropical rainforest within the Maliau Basin Conservation Area (MBCA), and lies at about 500 m above sea level and surrounded by hill mixed dipterocarp forest, with an abundance of majestic Agathis trees.
  • Trek to Ginseng Camp (approx. 9km: 6-7hrs).
    First 3 KM: Undulating track.
    Next 3 KM: Ascending trail.

    Next 2 KM: A consistent descent.
    Last 1 KM: Steepest descent.
  • Arrival at Ginseng Camp.

  • Ginseng Camp or research station was constructed in 2005 and can accommodate up to 20 visitors, and has hammock-style beds and toilets cum showers.
  • Walk around Ginseng Camp or Visit the nearby 27m high Ginseng Waterfall for a dip.
  • Dinner.
  • Rest and overnight at Ginseng Camp.

Day 3: GINSENG CAMP / MALIAU FALLS

  • Breakfast.

  • Trek to Maliau Falls (about 5.5km: 3-4hrs).
    First 0.7 KM: Steep incline to the Maliau Falls Intersection.
    Next 2 KM: Continue undulating up and down along the rim of the Basin to reach Lobah Camp.

    Rest at the Rim: Enjoy the panoramic full view of the Maliau Basin rim, which is about 25KM in diameter (slightly bigger than the Island of Singapore) at the Lobah Helipad.
    Last 2.8 KM: Steep and slippery trail decline to the Maliau Falls.

    To the Falls: Descent via wooden ladders, tree trunks and rocks assisted by ropes to get to the Falls.

  • Arrival at the majestic 7-tier Maliau Falls.
  • Trek back to Ginseng Camp.

  • Dinner.

  • Rest and overnight at Ginseng Camp.

Day 4: GINSENG CAMP / NEPENTHES CAMP

  • Breakfast.

  • Trek to Nephentes Camp, formerly known as Camel Trophy Camp (about 7km: 5-6hrs).
    First 1 KM: Ascending trail crossing a suspension and log bridge.
    Next 4 KM: Majority flat trail except for a steep ascent about halfway in.

    Last 2 KM: Combination of varied up and down routes.

  • Arrival at Nepenthes Camp.
  • Nepenthes Camp is a two-storey research station/building constructed by participants of the Camel Trophy in 1993 – complete with bunkbeds, showers and solar electricity, which can accommodate up to 15 visitors.

  • Visit to Takob Akob Falls & Giluk Falls (Optional and Pending on Weather/Ranger Advice).

  • Trek to the Giluk Falls about 1 hour away and back to Nepenthes Camp. A dip in the pool is possible and/or walk to the spectacular Takob-Akob Falls about 100 metres in height (10-storey building), which is about 2 hours away and back.

  • Dinner.
  • Rest and overnight at Nepenthes Camp.

Day 5: NEPENTHES CAMP / AGATHIS CAMP / DEPARTURE OUT

  • Breakfast.

  • Trek to Agathis Camp (approx. 7.5 km: 4-5hrs).
    First 4.5 KM: Trail is relatively flat and the walk will be easier.
    Next 3 KM: Undulating forests and climbing down steel ladders.

  • Witness an array of Pitcher Plants (Nepenthes species) or locally referred to as “monkey cup” during the trek – Maliau is home to all 6 species of Pitcher Plants.

  • Arrival at Agathis Camp.
  • Depart by road to Maliau Basin Security Gate.
  • Depart overland back to Kota Kinabalu via Keningau.

DEGREE OF ADVENTURE: Strenuous

LEVEL DESCRIPTIONS: One of the most demanding excursions – trekking over steep, rugged terrain in extreme wilderness. Excellent physical condition and endurance level is necessary.

NOTE: Above excursion can be arranged for ex-Tawau (starts and ends in Tawau); starts in KK and ends in Tawau, or vice versa.
