Brief Description
Kuching, in
Malay language means Cat. Situated at the mouth of the Sarawak river with a
population of about 360,000 people is the first pleasant surprise for most visitors to
Sarawak entering the State through Kuching International Airport. Kuching is the gateway
to the land of hornbill or what was formerly known as the land of the White Rajah, Sir
James Brooke or the land of the headhunters.
Kuching
Citys best historical reminders can be seen on the walking tour of Kuching. Situated
within close proximity to each other are the Tua Pek Kong Temple, the Courthouse, the
State Mosque, Square Tower, the General Post Office building, the Pavilion, the Sarawak
Museum which is the finest in Southeast Asia, and Chinese History Museum and the Islamic
Museum. A short boat ride across the Sarawak River brings one to the Fort Margherita,
which is now a Police Museum. Of course, there is also the Satok Suspension Birdge and
Malay villages, where house are built on stilts.
