The earthquake originated in the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, near Banda Aceh (located around 2,500 km away from Bali). Aceh province was closed to tourists in 2002 as a result of insurgency. It was the province which was worst hit with over 80,000 casualties. The niche destination, the island of Nias, a popular destination among surfers off North Sumatra has suffered severe damage with 122 confirmed casualties.
