BORNEO EDITORIAL: INDEPENDENT BORNEO? ======================================================== Dear Valued Subscribers, Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak will be celebrating 'Hari Merdeka' or Independence Day on 31 August. Although both states formed Malaysia together with Peninsular Malaysia (formerly known as Malaya) and Singapore on 16 September 1963, Sabah and Sarawak actually achieved independence from the British on 31 August 1963. Although, it was seldom mentioned, Sabah and Sarawak were both an independent country for 16 days 39 years ago. Brunei Darussalam gained an internal self-government from the British in 1959 but it is only as recent as in 1984, that Brunei was officially alleviated into full independence, whereas, Kalimantan was automatically controlled by the locals and directly proclaimed under the Republic of Indonesia on 17 August 1945 after the end of the Japanese occupation. In a sense, Borneo is an INDEPENDENT region under three different nations. For those who thought that the title of this editorial might have suggested a different perspective of an 'independent Borneo', here's something to ponder - given the present socio-economic-political disparity between the four regions, it is more likely that a Republic of Borneo will turn out to be a total disaster. One that will yield more hardship and poverty to Borneons. The experience of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union in the 1990s should serve as a reminder as to why Borneo should best remain as it is today. Even a united Germany requires many years to adapt. After all, unlike the other countries, Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan have long been part of (or is) an independent nation. Is there really a need to destroy a comfortable four-storey condominium owned by three different landlords? Feel free to share your feelings on this editorial, or any other related subject, at newsletter@e-borneo.com. ========================== 2. DESTINATION OF THE MONTH ================================ Pulau Tiga "Survivor Island", Sabah, Borneo ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ It was featured on our main page for most of this month. One of the best known island in the world courtesy of the American reality show Survivor Series. This is where the first Survivor was shot, but most TV viewers especially in the US, thought it is a remote island far far away from civilisation and thousand of miles away from the dense rainforest jungles of wild Borneo. It may shock visitors that the island is actually not too far away from Kota Kinabalu, the city of Sabah. But it is a rare opportunity to see some of the props utilising local materials created for the show, as well as the island's attractions such as a mud volcano, etc. A must for those seeking an island getaway holiday, or for the die-hard fans of the Survivor TV series - this is where it all started! Also, read two newly added travellers' tales at the Leisure section entitled: "Our Adventure to Pulau Tiga", and "Survivor Island - Mudcaked on Isle of Mystery". They were first held on the Baram River to settle local rivalries between disputing tribes without resorting to war and headhunting. The excitement of those warlike, bygone days is rekindled as the State's expert boatmen take up their paddles to prove their prowess. Much awaited by the locals, these days though, there is the added excitement of jet ski and kayak racing with the exception of the traditional ferry boats or Perahu Tambang race that will definitely attract the crowd. TRAVEL TIPS ============================= Babysitters on Vacation ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ So you and your spouse would like a quite dinner together and the hotel provides a babysitter, easy right? Double-check the hours of babysitting services. Make sure that they are available during the time you need. If not, see if they can recommend anybody. Ask the same questions as you would at home. If there is an organized program ask questions. - Do they have planned activities? - Are meals provided? - How much does it cost? - Are they trained in CPR or emergency procedures? - What is the ratio between babysitter and children? Remember that this is a family vacation. Try to do as much as you can with the family and your children, the memories can never be replaced. << ---------------------------------------------------------- << Courtesy of PlanetHoliday << Asia's premier Hotel Reservation site since 1997, << offering discounts of up to 75% off the regular << rates at hotels throughout Asia! << URL: http://www.e-borneo.com/travel/ph/ << ---------------------------------------------------------- ================================ 9. And this is an unbiased observation which has nothing to do with the fact that they add a link back to us. Full of information about trade and investment opportunities in Sabah. If you want to test the Sabah market, the SIE is one of the rare opportunity for foreign companies to exhibit their products or services. Alas, all exhibition booths have been taken up.
