BORNEO EDITORIAL ======================== ***2001 in Retrospect*** Greetings Fellow Borneons and Friends, We have arrived at the last month of 2001. And what a year 2001 has been. An event that had shocked us and touched our heart is undoubtedly the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US. Somehow, this atrocity had brought the world together fighting for a safer and fearless world to live in. It would be hard for anyone today to forget '911' and its consequences in a hurry. In Borneo, this was the year of a new CM in Sabah, the landmark Likas seat by-election in Sabah, the Sarawak General Election, and Visit Brunei Year. For tragedy, who can forget the horrifying ethnic clashes in Kalimantan, and the Ellie James Mount Kinabalu mishap. As for e-borneo.com, we reach a personal milestone on 2nd December. We turned two years old and we are still here largely because of your support. e-borneo.com has evolved tremendously through your invaluable help and feedback. Our e-newsletter had grown from about 200 subscribers in early 2000 to well over 2,000 strong subscribers today. Thank you. One of our New Years resolutions is to make e-borneo.com a peoples website - your website. MYSTERY GIFT WINNER AND FEEDBACKS! =========================================== Every month, we are randomly giving away a mystery gift to one of our valued e-newsletter subscribers. Simply tell us how we can improve our e-newsletter and/or website so that they can be of much value to you. Email your suggestion to contribution@e-borneo.com and the best suggestions will be published in the next edition of our e-newsletter. This month's lucky Mystery Gift winner goes to a Guntoyon from Malaysia who sent us the following feedback: =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "One of the things I like most about your newsletter is the readers' comments. They give your site some brilliant testimonials and approvals. I reckon your site would be more interesting if you have a special page like a Guest Book or Visitors' Comments. I bet I'm not the only one who thinks so. I know I will be one of the firsts to read what readers have to say about a site from my own region." Guntoyon (ED: Thanks and your suggestion will be seriously looked into.) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= Some of the other suggestions/feedbacks received in no particular order (some are edited for clarity or translated from other languages) are as follows: =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "I like to support Mrs. Green of UK on her comments on the lack of natural history and environmental information on your website (October issue - http://www.e-borneo.com/newsletter/0110.shtml ). Borneo, with Mount Kinabalu as its centre of attraction, has been a jewel to many Western biological collectors. Today, many natural history information centres are established for the benefit of both Malaysians and foreign biologists. For e.g., the educational programmes provided by the Sabah Parks at Kinabalu Park provides valuable information to the general public. I suggests that you include more links to such information and even better, if you are able to get those Bornean biologists or experts involved. I hope this will help you. If not, at least I tried." Tan F. L., Malaysia (ED: Thanks Tan, we hope that there's an expert willing to be a columnist at our site) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "I read with great interest your recent article about newly discovered reef systems within close proximity to Miri. I am currently completing a large volume photographic book about the reefs and rain forests of Sabah. It is my hope and belief that through education and understanding, we can encourage people to preserve these delicate and endangered ecosystems." Murray S. Kaufman, U.S.A. Author of Reefs and Rain Forests, the Natural Heritage of Malaysian Borneo (to be released December, 2001) website (currently under construction): http://www.murraykaufman.com (ED: Murray, I am sure most Borneons would love a preview of your book) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "I have always admired the rarity of your ecards. I am sure it is one of the very few available on the Internet with a Borneo theme. Maybe, you would like to consider expanding the section into various themes such as birthdays, anniversaries, newborns, festive celebrations, national celebrations, and not forgetting indigenous festivals like Kaamatan and Gawai." A Sarawakian in Brunei, BSB (ED: We will try our best to come up with something in the near term.) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "I think it very important for your site to have more news on interaction and relation with Kalimantan in Indonesia." Shintani, Indonesia (ED: Thanks Shintani. We are looking for a person who might be interested to join our free Editorial Partnership Programme for contribution in this area of specialty.) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= ======================================= 5. TRAVEL BORNEO DESTINATION ======================================= Current travel destination spotlights, to be published at the website are as follows: * Lambir Hills National Park, Miri, Sarawak URL: http://www.e-borneo.com/travel/lambir-hill.shtml * Scaling the Roof of SEA - Mt Kinabalu, Sabah URL: http://www.e-borneo.com/travel/roof-mk.shtml ============================ 6. GENERAL TRAVEL TIPS ============================ - Matching keys with their locks: When traveling with suitcases, use a marker or a little tag to number the locks and their keys. This way you won't have trouble trying to figure out which keys go with which locks. - Preventing duplicate hotel keys: Try to choose a hotel with modern electronic locks that use key cards. The codes for these key cards change for every new guest. This will help prevent others from having the key to your room. - Booking flights when traveling with your kids: When traveling with children, try to book during the non-peak period. You may have a free seat for your child to stretch out or sleep. And also don't forget to bring along your child's favorite snack. There's a chance th`t he.shd lax nnt lhke what they sdrve nn board. LATEST VIRUS/WORM/TROJAN ================================ W32.Badtrans.B@mm (Discovered: Nov 24, 2001) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* W32.Badtrans.B@mm is a MAPI worm that emails itself out using different file names. It also creates the file \Windows\System\Kdll.dll. It uses functions from this file to log keystrokes. Recently upgraded to category 4 threat as defined by Symantec due to increased in infections. More details/Removal Instructions: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.badtrans.b@mm.html W32.Aliz.Worm (Discovered: May 22, 2001) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* A Category 4 threat (severe threat) as defined by Symantec, WW32.Aliz.Worm is a SMTP mass mailer worm that can be executed just by reading or previewing the file. The worm currently only replicates on Win9X machines. It doesn't seem to propagate on NT platform. The worm propagates by obtaining email addresses from the Windows Address Book and sending itself to those addresses. When the worm arrives by email, the worm uses a MIME exploit allowing the virus to be executed just by reading or previewing the file.
