BORNEO EDITORIAL ======================== ***The Mythical Mount Kinabalu*** Greetings Fellow Borneons and Friends, One of the buzz of the month was definitely the sad-ending to the search for British teenager, Ellie James, who was lost while descending from the summit of Mount Kinabalu. The drama was given a lot of press coverage, both locally and internationally since this was only the first reported incident of a foreigner who died on Mount Kinabalu. Only about three Malaysian climbers were reported missing and still to be found in the last several decades since the commercialisation of the fabled mountain. Roughly about 30,000 people trek up the 4,095m mountain each year. While there were some finger-pointing going around on who should be blamed for the unfortunate mishap, there are local beliefs that Ellie might have been lured astray by the mountain "spirits". Normally in a group climb, there will be at least two guides, one in front and the other at the back. It was reported by an anonymous source that the guide at the tail 'could not see' the two teenagers. And it was after Ellie has left her brother to seek help that the rescue team managed to 'see' and find the boy (but not a trace of Ellie). Although Ellie was said to be an experienced adventure traveller, she should be able to find her way back on to the hiking track. As Ellie's father was quoted in the daily press, "What happened (to Ellie) after that is speculation." Mount Kinabalu is believed to be the origin and end of human beings by the local indigenous people. In the final analysis, Ellie died for a good course and she met her fate in the heavens. God bless her soul. What do you think? Feel free to share your feelings on this editorial, or any related subject, at feedback@e-borneo.com. Ikbar from Brunei Darussalam who emailed us the following ingenous suggestion: ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^ I am a frequent visitor to your website, which is definitely one of the most complete and largest compilations of all things Borneo. I am also one of your first newsletter subscriber. May I suggest to include some short 'Travel Tips' in your newsletter which will be useful for any travellers coming to this part. This may also tie in to travel theme. Thank you for entralling me electronically. Mohd. Ikbar ^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^ (ED: See below for this useful suggestion. Thanks Mohd Ikbar.) ======================================== 4. OTHER SUBSCRIBERS' SUGGESTIONS ======================================== Thanks to all who had sent us feedbacks including those not published below. We look forward to more this month. Simply email your suggestion to contribution@e-borneo.com. The following are constructive feedbacks in no particular order (some are edited for clarity): =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "Create an image poll, like maybe a jumbled-up picture for your visitors to guess who or what the image is. Better than just a straight poll which can be pretty dry sometimes." Freddy, Sarawak (ED: Thanks Freddy, we have included that in our site) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= "I found that you are having a hard time with your Borneo Directory. Maybe you should think of a do-it-yourself one. But your current directory is still very good except for your submit page." Linda Simmons, USA (ED: Linda, we are still looking for a very secured one. Can you or anyone suggest one?) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= Any special coverage on the teenage British girl who went missing on Mount Kinabalu? Jeff, Sabah (ED: We have since added one. Thanks Jeff.) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= I really like your electronic business section which showed me a lot of shorcuts to starting my own online business. Can you add more to this section in the coming months. I know many people will find it very useful. Adam, Sarawak (ED: Note taken, for now, just go to http://www.kbizness.com/ ) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= I propose a 'Sexuality' board in your Borneo Forum. It is intended for topics more related to sexual awareness as well as education, which normally is a big taboo here. It can spice up your forum too. (ED: Forum participants' needs are our priority) =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= |************************************************************************* | ADVERTISEMENT - The IMC's "Insider Secrets" Version 3.0 course | | The BEST SELLING Net Marketing Course in the Internet! | From the No. 1 Internet Guru in the Planet! | |************************************************************************* | | Discover THE SAME SECRETS Corey Rudl used to balloon his | one-man basement operation into a $5.2 million Internet | company -- on a shoestring budget. | | If you want to skip the hurdles, ENJOY A HANDS-FREE INCOME, | and PROFIT WILDLY from the mistakes of investor-funded | dot-coms, I highly recommend the Internet Marketing Centre | (IMC) newest course version at: | | http://www.e-borneo.com/imc/secret.shtml | | You'll discover 1,000+ PAGES OF THE EXACT INFORMATION YOU | NEED to start and grow your very own highly profitable | Internet business. | |------------------------------------------------------------------------- | For more info on how you can place your ad here | e-mail advertise@e-borneo.com |------------------------------------------------------------------------- | |************************************************************************* ======================================= 5. TRAVEL BORNEO DESTINATION ======================================= KIULU WATER RAFTING - The Kiulu river is about a hour leisurely drive from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. The main attraction is the Water Rafting extravaganza. Rafting down the river, the scenic view will be rubber trees, fruit farms, padi-fields and isolated Dusun villages in mild river water of Grade 1-2, ideal for family groups. Raft may need to be carried over shallow river occasionally. http://www.e-borneo.com/travel/kiulu.shtml ========================= 6. TRAVEL TIPS ========================= (These tips on climbing Mount Kinabalu - the destination currently under international spotlight - are courtesy of 'Svengali', which can be found in full at the Borneo Forum's Government and Politics board) My condolences to the family who lost their daugther to Mt Kinabalu. Despite what has been said, Mt Kinabalu is still a safe mountain to climb. While climbing the mountain doesn't require any specialised mountaineering skills, it is useful to be reminded one is traveling on unfamiliar grounds, and it pays to stay focussed on the climb. Some useful tips for a successful climb include: 1. Wearing adequate clothing 2. Always climb in a group and stay close to the group 3. Focus on what you do, i.e., don't get distracted 4. Always use the well-trodden path 5. Never get reckless 6. Climb during dry season 7. Stay where you are if you are lost 8. Leave a trail in case you have to walk away from the path where you got lost 9. When you want to relieve yourself, always ask permission (folklore tip) 10. Never take what doesn't belong to you from the Mountain (folklore tip) Additional tips from ED: 11. Always stay close to your guide 12. Wrap up your dry clothings with plastic bags in your napsack 13. Bring lots of chocolates and candies 14. No red meat or heavy meal before climbing 15. Never sit or lay down on high altitute (just stand still) 16. Cover your nose (and mouth) with a scarf in windy condition on high ground 17. Don't shout or make too much noise (folklore tip) 18. Respect the mountain and 'spirits' even if you are a sceptic (folklore tip) ("Take nothing, leave nothing but your footsteps") Did we miss out on any more tips? ================================= 7. LATEST VIRUS/WORM/TROJAN ================================ Code Red II (Discovered: Aug 4, 2001) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* CodeRed II was discovered on August 4, 2001. It has been called a variant of the original CodeRed Worm because it uses the same "buffer overflow" exploit to propagate to other web servers. The worm propagates by installing itself into a random Web server using a known buffer overflow exploit, contained in the file Idq.dll. Only systems that have not been patched with the latest Microsoft IIS service packs can be affected. A Category 4 threat as defined by Symantec. More details/removal instructions: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/codered.ii.html W32.Sircam.Worm@mm (Discovered: Jul 17, 2001) *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Recently upgraded to a Category 4 threat by Symantec. W32.Sircam.Worm@mm contains its own SMTP engine, and propagates in a manner similar to the W32.Magistr.Worm. Due to what appears to be a bug, this worm does not replicate under Windows NT or 2000. This worm arrives as an email message with the following content: Subject: The subject of the email will be random, and will be the same as the file name of the email attachment. Attachment: The attachment is a file taken from the sender's computer and will have the extension .bat, .com, .lnk or .pif added to it. Message: The message body will be semi-random, but will always contain one of the following two lines (either English or Spanish) as the first and last sentences of the message. English Version: First line - Hi! How are you? Last line - See you later. Thanks More details/Removal Instructions: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html (ED: e-borneo.com's mail server has received more than 10 such infected mails) =========================== 9.
