1. BORNEO EDITORIAL

======================

***The Haze's back - The return of an uninvited guest***

Greetings Fellow Borneons and Friends,

A recent editorial from a leading national newspaper wrote:

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=

"THE haze enveloping several parts of the region, including Malaysia, reinforces the nagging perception that there is no long-term regional policy on reducing, if not eliminating, forest fires and managing their hazardous consequences on the ecosystem.

At best, approaches have been ad-hoc which only involved, as was the case in the 1997-1998 haze that choked much of the region, remedial action such as firefighting and water-bombing. True, the root of the problem largely lies in the periodic forest fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan. But clearly, this is among the environmental problems which transcend borders and whose impact does not recognise any constituency.

Depending on the direction of the winds, the raging fires have a differential impact across the region only in terms of severity. Primarily, all the countries must grapple with the environmental devastation, air pollution and health havoc."

=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=

The question is why there is still a lack of concerted regional action as well as a coherent framework to tackle such environmental problems, which have detrimental effects not only on our ecology, but also on our economy. How can these fires be controlled given Indonesia's financial predicament? Can the guest country be sued over economic/environmental losses? Who should take the lead to get rid of the uninvited guest?

What do you think?

Feel free to share your feelings on this editorial, or any related subject, at feedback@e-borneo.com. Please note that for the purpose of interactivity, your name/nick and comments received may be published in our e-newsletters or on our website (Note: Rest assured that your email address will not be published, but if you have a website, please include your URL - we will give it a FREE promotion here for you).

2. WHAT'S NEW

==================

e-borneo.com's virtual guide, Raj, has managed to brainwash us into creating a 'corner' all to himself. For better or for worse, Raj has demanded to be the 'Executive Director' of our website's content and direction.

One of his first directive was to reshift the site's content towards primary Borneo starting this month. In the coming months, many non-Borneo related items such as those in the 'Inside Internet' section will be relegated to the backseat and some will no longer be updated.

Our main page has already underwent a minor facelift with the daily updated Malaysian and Asia-Pacific news headlines being the firsts to be removed and placed into the backseat.

If you think he is not going the right way, do tell us at webmaster@e-borneo.com and we will be delighted to give him the sack (or reduce his daily salary of 100 bananas). Although we find it 'a hard pill to swallow', taking orders from a 'wise-guy' orangutan, it is fun, and yep, it is real cheap.

=================================

3. MYSTERY GIFT WINNER!

=================================

Every month, we aim to give away a mystery gift to one of our valued e-newsletter subscribers. Simply tell us how we can improve our e-newsletter and/or website so that they can be of much value to you. Email your suggestion to contribution@e-borneo.com and the best suggestions will be published in the next edition of our e-newsletter.

We received so many excellent feedbacks in the last month that we have to draw out a winner for this month out of 3 or 4 equally invaluable suggestions. This month's lucky Mystery Gift winner goes to Cheryl J. from Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia who emailed us the following ingenous suggestion:

^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^-^

Excellent newsletter and love your Website.

A suggestion for your newsletter: Introduce
an educational game or something on Borneo
in your newsletter so that besides introducing
Borneo to your readers, it is also likely that
some will print out your newsletter and pass
it to their friends.

I think text-type of games like maybe crossword,
puzzle, or word search would be ideal for your
type of newsletter.

For me, it will make your newsletter even more
fun to read.

Keep up the good work.

Cheryl J.

(ED: We appreciated Cheryl's idea so much that we introduced such 'game' below)

that would love to try the tasty sounding foods of
Borneo. We have a problem! Some of the recipes
are not in English and there are ingredients that
we have no way to buy or even know what they are.

I suggest:

1. Please translate recipes to English
2. Please explain what some of the spices and
other ingredients are
3. Please offer for sale the ingredients that
we cannot buy in the U.S.

Thank you for having a website so we can learn
more about Borneo!!!"

6. HOT BORNEO DISCUSSIONS

==============================================

What Borneons are currently talking about online? The most popular topics are undoutedly the candidacy of one of the Forum's regular participants in the Likas, Sabah by-election to be held on 21 July. This is indeed a rare occassion for any discussion board over the Net. Some laugh at him for contesting against political heavyweights, while some felt honoured to have interacted with a candidate through the forum. These and more, only at the Borneo Forum:
