FACTS
The
2002 World Cup is the first one to be held in Asia, and the second one not held in either
European or South America continents. USA in 1994 was the first unchartered territory for
the footballing world, although it is often argued that the 1994 tournament was still held
in the 'America' continent.
Only
seven (7) countries have ever won the World Cup since 1930 - Uruguay, Italy, Germany,
Brazil, England, Argentina, and France.
Brazil
won the most times with 4 world cups, followed by Germany (3), Italy (3), Argentina (2),
Uruguay (2), England (1) and France (1).
No
European team has ever won a world cup on non-European soil, whereas, Brazil is the only
South American team to win on European soil in 1958.
France's
Just Fontaine still holds the record for the no. of goals scored in a World Cup tournament
with 13 goals (in 1958), followed by Hungary's Sandor Kocsis (11 goals in 1954), and
Germany's Gerd Muller (10 goals in 1974).
Russia's
Oleg Salenko scored the most goals (5) in one World Cup match (against Cameroon in 1994).
