8 troopers wounded in MILF clash

By Richel Umel and Aniceto Rasalan, Mindanao News Bureau

ILIGAN CITY—Eight soldiers from the Armed Forces’ Task Force Diamond II were wounded, two of them seriously, in a clash yesterday morning with Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerrillas in Lake Dapao, Pualas, Lanao del Sur.

Sgt. Limuel Dofitas, 29, and Anthony Entrampas, were brought to the Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital for treatment, according to Capt. Diogenes Robellos, medical officer of the 4th Infantry Division.

Six other troops, he said, were airlifted to Camp Evangelista Hospital in Cagayan de Oro City.

Army officials said the soldiers were on foot patrol near Lake Dapao, when they chanced upon rebels under the command of Abu Asrap of the MILF’s Internal Brigade.

On Sunday night, a bomb exploded in front of the police headquarters in a town in Sultan Kudarat, injuring a passer-by and breaking windows, a military official said yesterday.

Officials said the bomb exploded Sunday night under a garbage truck parked in front of the police building in Isulan town in Sultan Kudarat province.

Bomb blast

The blast damaged window panes and three air conditioners in the building and wounded a passing woman, said Col. Hilario Atendido, spokesman of the military’s Southern Command.

No group has claimed responsibility for the bomb attack, but military officials said they suspect the MILF, which is battling the government for an independent Islamic state in the southern Philippines.

The rebel group was also blamed by the military for a bomb explosion Saturday that slightly damaged a concrete bridge in the town of Labangan in southern Zamboanga del Sur province, Atendido said. No one was hurt in that blast.

In another attack, a large group of MILF rebels opened fire on an army outpost in Alamada town in southern North Cotabato province, wounding at least three militiamen Saturday, the military said.
