8 Abu Sayyaf men killed, 7 captured
ZAMBOANGA (AFP) -- At least
eight Abu Sayyaf guerrillas were killed and seven others captured as Philippine troops
pressed on with a bid to rescue five hostages in Jolo, the military said yesterday.
The clashes occurred in
Panglima Estino town and nearby areas on Monday, when patrolling soldiers encountered more
than 20 members of the Abu Sayyaf, the military said.
Running gunbattles ensued when
the rebels splintered into smaller groups and retreated towards a nearby jungle, the
military said.
Later on the same day, troops
in clearing operations were met by a volley of gunfire from Abu Sayyaf rebels hiding in a
nearby village, the military said.
Eight Abu Sayyaf guerrillas
were killed in the encounters, while seven others were either captured or surrendered, the
military said.
There were, however, no reports
or sightings of the five American, Filipino, and Malaysian hostages still held by the
gunmen.
The latest rebel casualties
bring the number of Abu Sayyaf guerrillas killed since the assault to free 19 hostages was
launched last month to a total of 137. Five soldiers and three government militias have
also died in the fighting.
