No report of Abu Sayyaf members fleeing to Sabah, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 (Bernama) -- There has been no report yet of members of the Abu Sayyaf Muslim separatist group fleeing to Sabah following Philippine military operations against their hideouts in Jolo in southern Philippines.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said:"So far we've not detected any of them fleeing to Sabah."

When approached by reporters on the matter, Najib said the government was monitoring the situation in Jolo and taking steps to check anticipated instrusions into Malaysian territory and other national security hazards in the aftermath of the Philippine military raids there.

Najib said this at the ministry here after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Malaysian Ex-Servicemen's Assocation and the Metrowangsa Group for the establishment of a trust fund for military and police personnel.

He was also asked about the fate of three Malaysians held hostage in Jolo after being abducted from Pandanan Island off Sabah last Sept 10.

Najib said he was informed that they are safe and well.
