Beef up security in resort islands immediately:
Osu
KOTA KINABALU, Sept 13
(Bernama) -- Chief Minister Datuk Osu Sukam Wednesday urged the authorities to immediately
beef up security in the resort islands off Sabah as agreed upon at the State Security
Committee meeting on Saturday.
He said it was crucial that the measures be enforced as soon as possible following
Sunday's kinapping of three people from a resort in Pandanan Island near Semporna by four
armed men.
The state government would write in to the federal government on the security concerns in
Sabah, he told reporters after chairing the weekly state cabinet meeting here.
Although the latest kidnap drama occurred before the proposed security measures could be
put in place, the authorities must go ahead to implement them to restore public and
investor confidence on the capabilities of the security forces to ensure safety in the
state, Osu said yesterday it was decided at the State Security Committee meeting that a
direct link be established between resort operators and security forces.
It was also decided to station security forces at all resort islands in the state.
Asked to comment on the call by Philippine chief negotiator Robert Aventajado yesterday
that Malaysia and the Philippines step up sea patrols along the border, Osu said the state
government welcomed any effort to prevent a recurrence of the kidnap episode.
He said the security forces must think of short and long-term measures to protect the
country's territorial waters from being encroached by armed groups.
