ABU SAYYAF: MALAYSIAN POLICE HAVE COUNTED POSSIBILITY, SAYS IGP

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian police have counted the possibility of the Abu Sayyaf group sneaking into the country to seek sanctuary after releasing all their hostages.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Norian Mai said they had counted such possibility and had made appropriate preparations to patrol waters off Sabah.

"If the situation warrants more, we will consider," he told reporters after meeting exco members of the Ex-Policemen Association at Bukit Aman.

He was commenting on a foreign newswire report yesterday, quoting Philippine and Malaysian officials as saying that there was a great possibility that the Abu Sayyaf group might escape and seek sanctuary in Sabah to avoid military reprisal once they released all the hostages.

Norian said the Malaysian police had established bilateral ties with the Philippine police in resolving common problem. -- BERNAMA
