Gov't optimistic on hostages' release

QUEZON CITY, (ABS-CBN) - The government is optimistic that the Abu Sayyaf will finally release anytime soon its remaining hostages that it has kept captive in Jolo since April.

Chief government negotiator Robert Aventajado said he was to go to Jolo Wednesday to discuss with Abu Sayyaf leader Ghalib Andang (Commander Robot) the final details for the release of the hostages.

"Meron pang konting finishing touches. Pupunta kami ni Ambassador Azzarouq sa Jolo, may lilinawin ako kay Robot," he said.

(We'll make some finishing touches. Former Libyan Ambassador Rajab Abdulaziz Azzarouq and I will clear up some things with Robot)

Aventajado said he remains optimistic that the Abu Sayyaf would release all of the hostages. He said President Joseph Estrada told him to ensure the hostages' safe release.

"Ang tagubilin ni Presidente, ligtas dapat ang buhay ng hostages (The President ordered me to keep the hostages safe)," he added.

In the meantime, Aventajado said a jet from Libya, which arrived in Manila Monday night, would be stationed only at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

The arrival of the Libyan plane has raised hopes on the speedy release of the hostages.

"Diyan lang yan sa NAIA (The plane will be there at NAIA in the meantime)," he said, when asked whether the plane would be brought to Jolo.
