German journalist admits Der Spiegel paid ransom QUEZON CITY, (ABS-CBN) - German
journalist Andreas Lorenz admits his magazine paid an "exit fee" to secure his
release, even as chief government negotiator Robert Aventajado warns Muslim extremists
against further kidnappings.
Lorenz also wrote in Der Spiegel magazine that the
gunmen had asked for $3 million. He did not specify, however, if the same amount was paid.
Der Spiegel reportedly struck a deal to pay a ransom,
which was turned over in a meeting at the house of Sulu Gov. Abdusakur Tan.
Lorenz's revelation came, even as chief government negotiator
Robert Aventajado warned Muslim extremists against any further kidnappings while
negotiations are on-going for the release of more than a dozen mostly foreign hostages
abducted from the Sipadan diving resort.
Aventajado made the statement amid reports that members of the
extremist Abu Sayyaf Group have been making rounds in Tawi-Tawi and Palawan in search of
potential foreign hostages.
