Hotel's Sungkai delights

By Noorlela Abdul Rahman, Borneo Bulletin Sunday (Dec 03 2000)

It's hard not to think about food in the fasting month of Ramadhan. Every Muslim has his or her own taste in food for breaking of the fast.

But the real question is whether to make dishes at home or buy from the huge variety available at food stalls.

Among the popular stalls in Brunei-Muara District are those located near the national stadium in Berakas and stalls in Gadong as well as hotels.

If you fancy something different, why not try the Orchid Garden Hotel, which is offering Sungkai (breaking of fast) buffet, consisting of mouth-watering Malay, Chinese and Western delicacies.

A customer, who had just broken her fast, described the food at the buffet as "excellent" and she enjoyed every delicacy.

"People should try to break their fast at the Orchid Garden Hotel because it is money well-spent," said another satisfied diner.

Another customer tried the hotel's sungkai buffet "for a change of taste".

I approached another customer who tried the buffet. "Which dish did you like the most?" I asked the woman.

"I like the BBQ spare ribs and deep fried Garopa. The salads were wonderful, and not forgetting the desserts too were very good particularly the chocolate mousse," she said.

Tony Mohamed, the Food & Beverage Director, said there are four stalls offering different dishes and every day the chefs change the menu during the fasting month.

Those who are fond of "cendol" can try the hotel's version. You might like to try cendol with "pulut". It has a "sweet and a bit crunchy taste".

What about the main course? Just to mention a few, there are BBQ spare ribs, fish, vegetables and other delicious dishes.
